Indianapolis enforcement officers are cracking down on drug crimes in Marion County. A recent piece in the IndyStar discussed the move, noting Marion County was designated a place in the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program.

What is the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program? This program was started back in 1988, in the midst of the war on drugs. The program is designed to help promote coordination efforts between local, state and federal agencies, as well as tribal law enforcement agencies where applicable.

These coordination efforts are supposed to translate to greater enforcement.

What does this designation mean for drug enforcement efforts in Indianapolis? Becoming part of this program means that the county will receive federal resources designed to help increase drug enforcement efforts.

Senator Joe Donnelly claims that involvement in the program will help “root out drug traffickers” as well as “expand prevention efforts.” Information on the details of support provided by federal agencies will be provided at a news conference set to occur later this month.

What should I do if I am charged with a drug crime in Indianapolis? Those who are charged with drug crimes, whether for possession, distribution or trafficking, should take the charges seriously. These charges can come with both criminal and social repercussions.

Criminal repercussions can include hefty fines and potential imprisonment. Social consequences can come with a criminal conviction. These consequences can include difficulty finding employment and housing.

Defenses to these charges are available. Contact an experienced Indianapolis drug possession charges lawyer to discuss your case and better ensure your legal rights are protected.
